Volunteering

Join The Charge

Some 8,000 personnel volunteered their time to participate in the Global Charge in 2023.  Activities included cleaning riverbeds and beaches, building bridges and tree planting.

During the past year, military personnel alone have completed 130 sustainability and conservation activities across the globe:

Beach Cleaning in Kinloss

Over 100 soldiers from 65 Engineer Squadron, 39 Engineer Regiment braved windy conditions to clean up the coastline to the rear of their camp in Kinloss, leaving it a safer and more beautiful place for wildlife and visitors.

Tree Planting

Army reservists from 158 Regiment RLC which has Squadrons based across the East Midlands and East Anglia, planted acorns, walnuts, conkers and sweet chestnuts sourced from the Commanding Officer’s own farm and from the Army ranges at Ash Vale.

The seedlings were nurtured into saplings and will be planted later in an area chosen by each individual reservist

Conservation work in the Caribbean

Whilst deployed in the Caribbean personnel on HMS DAUNTLESS supported local conservation work including the netting and reviewing health of turtles, preparing local communities for upcoming hurricane season, and cleaning beaches.

Restoring tarns in the Lake District

A team from the Light Dragoons worked with the RSPB to re-wet a Lake District peat bog to boost wildlife.  This action will help to rebalance part of the eco-system which has been over-farmed. Read more here

Throughout the week of 19 June 2024, thousands will unite and take part in a variety of Global Charge activities.Join the ranks of others already making changes and volunteering their time:

  • Gather a group together and conduct some activity to enhance the biosphere or make some change that helps out.  This may be a clean-up, or work with a local charity for a few hours.

  • Have a meal together – this could be any form at all – we have had everything from Ration packs, through BBQs to our Flagship dinner at Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew.

  • Raise funds for a sustainability or conservation charity of your choice.

  • Submit some photos and tell the story on social media using the #JointheCharge #LeadtheCharge

Open to all, simply register your interest and speak with The Global Charge Team.
